Jerome Potter came to Fortune Sound last month for the first ESC CTRL Shift event, after his hour set I got to drink and chat with him. We talked about him, his interests and what’s to come, check it out!

First, what attracted you to the whole web 1.0 scene?

I did the first video in that style in August 2010 and at that time I was influenced by people in Los Angeles like Total Freedom and NGUZUNGUZU were doing this party called “Wildness” and they had that aesthetic. And I just did that video because it was easier to do 3D stuff than going out and shooting with a camera, then it wasn’t even a scene… I wasn’t thinking of it being anything it was more “oh, I can do a music video for cheaper” and just getting YouTube clips and splicing them together. So it wasn’t a choice at all, it just kind of fell into that.

What would you consider yourself, what would you label yourself?

Musically it’s house music, everything I do is influenced by house music. As far as visual stuff I mean, we’ll see where it goes. Next EP I release will be a different visual style, it’ll always progress. Genre’s are things that people like to use to describe things so it’s easier to consume for the public, I don’t really like to put myself in a label.

Do you play video games?

Yea I do.

What’s your favorite video game?

Of all time?

Of all time…

Probably Zelda Ocarina Of Time for N64

Hahaha I literally guessed that, what attracted you to taking social media? It’s what you were around right?

Yea, I feel like every musician or any artist right now has to use social media to communicate.

Ummm, are we ever gonna get any more LOL Boys?

Ummmm no, probably not. I mean, that project kind of was a internet project and we were happy with seeing how the Changes EP did. Just the combination of being in separate locations it’s really hard to work, but Markus and I were proud of that EP and it was what we had to show for it.

If you lived on the internet what would be your URL?

Jerome.lol, when there’s a dot lol which I hear is in the works.

No .net?

No, there’s gonna be a .lol soon… it’s happening.

Inspirations?

808 & Heartbreaks by Kanye West, the jazz drummer Buddy Rich and a lot of kind of indie pop that I was listening to in High school.

My personal favorite track of yours is “House Track 4 Sam”, who is Sam and how did that track come about?

Sam is Samo Sound Boy and we were releasing a Body High compilation and I wanted to do a track that I never released anything on, Body High. At that time I wasn’t making too much straight forward house music so I was like “I’ma make a house track for Sam” and it went from that.

What’s your favorite social media platform?

Ummmm…. Vine.

Hahahah really?

Yea, Vine is sick as fuck.

If you were born before the internet, what would you be doing?

Ummm, probably playing guitar in a band.

Did you play guitar in a band before?

Yea I did.

What’s an artist you can always fall back on?

I would say I can always fall back on You Forgot It In People by Broken Social Scene

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’ve got an EP coming out soon that’ll be released in the fall on Friends Of Friends, I played two of them tonight but it’s like a different vibe. Also, expect other things……

Much thanks to Jerome for his time, glad to have kicked it with ya! Check out his Facebook, Twitter & Soundcloud to keep an eye out for future work.
